Practice Schedule

We have a regular schedule of weekly zazen on Sundays, 5:00-6:30p.m.

Tuesdays        –           STO Skype Dharma Study Group     –     7:00 – 8:00p.m.

Students read a chapter or excerpt from the current text and formulate a question or two for our guiding teacher Taiun to answer. He provides his comments, and we then discuss as a larger group.

This is a great way to get to know members of our STO sangha affiliate groups throughout the U.S. and Canada, including our Sensei (teacher).

We will do two 25-minute periods of zazen, with kinhin (walking meditation) between sits, discussion of our current book selection, and short chant to follow. $5 donation request per visit – more if you can, less if you can’t, or become a member.

Our current book study is on Living by Vow by Shohaku Okumura, which has a chapter dedicated to each of the major sutras and chants used in Zen centers around the world. We will discuss chapter 7 of the book.

Bring a meditation cushion if you have one, and wear loose clothing. We begin promptly at 5:00, so please plan your arrival accordingly.

9/24           –          Sunday Zen Practice (Community Fellowship)     –     5:00 – 6:30p.m.

For the fourth week of the month we will do the one 25-minute sitting period with kinhin (walking meditation), followed by the chanting of the Metta Sutta (Loving-kindness Sutra) and metta meditation practice. We will conclude with the meal chant and a light dinner. If you can, bring a vegetarian food item to share with the group. If you can’t, don’t worry – there will be plenty.

$5 donation request per visit – more if you can, less if you can’t, or become a member. If this is your first visit, RSVP here.

This week will include the normal program of zazen (sitting meditation) but will be geared MemphisZenLogo1towards newcomers and anybody wishing to brush up on technique. Bring a meditation cushion if you have one. We begin promptly at 5:00, so please plan your arrival accordingly.

If you have attended Newcomer Night before and do not prefer to hear the introduction to zazen, just be there and ready to sit by 5:25.

We will start with a brief orientation for newcomers, sit two periods of zazen with 5-10 minutes of walking meditation (kinhin) in between, followed by time for questions, answers, and discussion.

10/29          –          Sunday Zen Practice (Fifth Week, “Wild Card”)     –     5:00-6:30p.m.

The fifth week of the month will include the usual two periods of zazen sitting meditation. The additional element of the evening’s program might be a third sitting session, chanting practice, leadership training, a Dharma talk, or other focus on aspects of Zen practice.
